NASA: Hubble Breaks 'Cosmic Distance Record'

An international team of astronomers has broken the cosmic distance record by measuring the farthest milky way ever seen, NASA appear Th.

The team, comprising scientists from Yale University, the Space Telescope Science Plant, and the Academy of California, used Hubble's Broad Field Camera iii to mensurate the distance to the so-called GN-z11 galaxy. Located in the direction of the constellation Ursa Major, GN-z11 is a record-breaking 13.4 billion light years away, making it the virtually distant galaxy e'er discovered. It was formed just 400 million years after the Large Blindside explosion, NASA said.

"We've taken a major step dorsum in time, across what we'd ever expected to exist able to do with Hubble," Main Investigator Pascal Oesch of Yale Academy said in a argument. "We see GN-z11 at a time when the universe was only 3 percent of its electric current age."

Oesch and his teammates were able to precisely mensurate the distance to GN-z11 "spectroscopically by splitting the lite into its component colors" — a kickoff for a milky way then far away, NASA said.

Astronomers mensurate large distances by determining the "redshift" of a galaxy, the space bureau explained. Afar objects in the universe appear to be receding from us because their light is stretched to longer, redder wavelengths. Thus, the greater the redshift, the father the milky way.

GN-z11 is 25 times smaller than the Milky Way, but is "growing fast, forming stars at a rate well-nigh 20 times greater than our milky way does today," NASA said, calculation that the new Hubble observations shed new light on the nature of the early universe.

"Information technology's amazing that a galaxy so massive existed only 200 million to 300 million years after the very offset stars started to form," investigator Garth Illingworth of the University of California, Santa Cruz said in a statement. "It takes actually fast growth, producing stars at a huge rate, to have formed a galaxy that is a billion solar masses so before long."
